Monsters always lived on the outskirts of human society, plucking off poor souls that got too close to their domain. Monsters were weak and few in number. It was not uncommon for a person to live their entire life without seeing a single monster. Many who lived in cities lambasted the thought of monsters as “rural superstition.”

Approximately 300 years ago the monsters suddenly grew in both strength and number. They pushed back against the Cultured, pushing them to the brink of extinction. The Cultured were saved by the Old Heroes who helped build new, fortified cities to house the people.
