ceremony_of_mourning

A ceremony meant to lament a loss, usually performed during a funeral and at the beginning of the Week of Mourning.

Exact practices differ from family to family and from location to location. In Heorot it typically includes hiding one's face, fasting, wearing dark clothes, and group singing of mourning hymns.

During a funeral, the hymns are typically sung as the body is burned on a pyre. During the ceremony performed for the Week of Mourning an effigy of Karvargr is burned as a rememberance of his sacrifice and the many lives lost after the battle with the dragon that killed him.
